Leipzig ... Leipzig is the "Bach city of all Bach cities". Or, is this the title that Eisenach actually deserves? That is probably what everyone has to decide for himself. What Leipzig in the German Federal State of Saxony is as a Bach city, is what I don't really have to explain to you, do I? This epoch in Bach's life started in 1718, yes or in 1717, precisely in December 1717, and it depends, what you want to use as a benchmark. This era ended 27 years later, which is almost three decades, with Bach's death.
On a biographical basis, Bach's time in Leipzig is less exciting than the period until his move to the music metropolis on the river Pleiße. Highlights are without doubt the letter which he wrote in the deepest depression of his life to his school friend Georg Erdmann, the "Fight of Prefects", the evil summit of a fight between Bach and the authorities of the town. Plus, his biggest musical distinction from the King of Prussia and finally his farewell from this earth, which was matching his whole experience as a Thomas Cantor so perfectly. Those who are interested just a little more, what Johann Sebastian Bach experienced in this Saxon city of all Bach cities, gets to his short biography here. And these short biographies all come in different detailedness. Or you better read a real biography, which is not written by me.
