1 Why Is Mühlhausen a Bach City?

It was a short "guest performance" which made the city Mühlhausen in Northern Thuringia one of the Bach cities and just almost Mühlhausen had become no Bach place at all. The reason Mühlhausen almost became no Bach city was a huge fire. Not just one or two or four houses were destroyed. Several hundred caught fire, plus the stables burnt down to the foundations and the town council even thought not to sign the already fixed contract with the composer and organist from Arnstadt. But finally they did. However, this major fire changed the financial situation in Mühlhausen so much, that everything became very expensive very fast. Although Johann Sebastian Bach made more money, that is to say he received more than in his position before but as well more than the person that did his job in Mühlhausen before, he couldn't afford more.

Plus, there was one more reason for his short stay at Mühlhausen, which was a major fight between the church authorities at that time. It was a fight with a magnitude, which we nowadays only know from different countries and on TV. The biggest difference, however, compared to when he left Arnstadt was, that he left with the blessing of the mayor. He didn't leave Mühlhausen with burned bridges.

Just a little more than 365 days, Johann Sebastian Bach lived and acted in Mühlhausen, when he pushed along. To Weimar. Actually again. He already had worked there before. But "not really". Almost 33,333 residents are living here – you know it, I like numbers like this one. In the medieval time, Mühlhausen was the most powerful after Erfurt, but not today anymore. However, Mühlhausen is more contemplative today. Plus, Mühlhausen is a Hanseatic city. The name of Thomas Müntzer is connected to this town. The theme of the "Peasants War".
