Bach FAQ 94

Are There Even Two Seals / Logos / Signs / Monograms of Johann Sebastian Bach? That Is Bach Logo 1 and Bach Logo 2?

The Bach Logo, the New Bach Society NBG calls it Bach's Zeichen. We love Bach Seal, some call it Bach Coat of Arms or Bach Monogram. There are in fact truly two "real" seals of Johann Sebastian Bach. Not just one. However, this answer is confusing because if you are a Bach fan and not just enjoy Bach's music, you may now be thinking of the two black and white Bach Seals, one of which is actually no longer current. No longer current is the Bach Seal / Bach logo with the seven pegs ... or prongs, although they are not jagged, these prongs. It is particularly exciting that with Google USA - I also google myself when I write about a Bach topic - the Bach Seal / Bach Logo with the seven prongs actually has the lead. In the first ten Google results. The first search result also leads to the neighboring image offer and there seven of ten Bach Seals are the since 2009 no longer up to date. I wonder if I'll succeed in changing that. Ten out of ten results actually present exactly the Bach Seal or Bach Logo that Bach experts have considered to be the correct one since 1750/1760: that is, the one with the seven prongs.

There is no doubt: The Bach Seal with the five prongs is the "official" Bach logo, Bach Coat of Arms, Bach Sign, Bach Monogram ...  call it what you like. There is no "officially correct" name.

Today, the "old" coat of arms / logo, almost equal in rank in Germany, dominant in the rest of the world, is ghosting through publications and the internet. Even in Germany, the "old" one will probably never disappear from the worldwide web.

For about 260 years, that is from 1750 until almost 2010, it was clear to all Bach fans: seven prongs.

The Bach Logo from 1702. How ... You have never heard of it, and you have not read about that? You can change that. Here you can read when Bach ... and above all where and why he "immortalized" himself with the concept of his own Bach Family Logo. With one click you will be well-informed afterwards.

Quite officially, however, is now also another Bach Seal / Bach Logo a second "valid" Bach Seal. Quite essential was the "find" of the Putz Schranck (... right ... with " ck " ...) of Johann Sebastian Bach in the cathedral of Meissen (... the treasure chest). There, in fact, a Bach fan realized that the motif on the inside of the lid is strongly resembling the Bach Seal / Bach Logo / Bach's Sign. Finally, Bach experts in the renowned Bach Archive in Leipzig, Germany have finally determined: It is indeed the Bach Seal / Bach Logo ... and that has only five prongs, respectively cones ... because the prongs are not sharpened. As mentioned. A short overview about the history of the Bach Seal can be found close by, in the neighborhood so to speak, that is as FAQ 93 on this website. But you can get more detailed information about the development of the Bach Seal since the year 1702 on a later page. Since 1702? Correct ... from the year 1702 an engraved drawing of Johann Sebastian Bach is preserved. Still today. In Sangerhausen, Germany. More about it ... can be found with a click here.

That is just not possible! Is the above the second "official" Bach Seal? Yup, it is. At least a graphic implementation of the Bach Seal, which may be seen as the most authentic Bach Logo today. And who claims that? Well ... my wife and I do ... and according to Bach science and their research, it is correct.
