Bach Cities and Bach Places: Berlin, Capital of Germany

1   Why Is Berlin One of the Bach Cities?

Is Berlin Bach city or Bach place? Berlin is a Bach city in category C. Why are so important cities like Berlin and Dresden are just category C? Category C cities are locations, in which Johann Sebastian Bach once worked, that means he performed music or at least checked on an organ. However, he never lived in a category C city or community.

Berlin was the destination for Johann Sebastian Bach several times in his life. It started during the era, when he worked for Sovereign Leopold of Köthen in the year 1718, when he ordered a harpsichord. It goes without saying, he ordered it personally and that was in the work shop of Michael Mietke. 1719 he traveled to Berlin again and picked it up. 1741 he visited the nowadays again capital of Germany, and finally he visited Berlin in 1747 to perform guest performances at the court and organ concerts.

You think, it is not possible to characterize the capital of Germany in ten lines*? Well, let's check that together. 3.4 million residents are living here. To compare this number: in Tokyo it's a number of nine millions. Plus, Berlin is the biggest city in area in Germany. Berlin exists since the year 1237. From 1949 until 1990 Berlin was the capital of the GDR = DDR when Bonn was the capital of Western Germany. The "Bundesregierung", the Federal Government, the Federal President and the Federal Council of Germany were located in this city on the river Rhine. The international landmark in Berlin is for sure the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag. Berlin is divided in 23 districts. The heraldic animal is a bear. We skip history here, that saves time. Bach Cities and Bach Places: Dresden, Saxony, Germany

1   Why Is Dresden One of the Bach Cities?

Is Dresden Bach city? Dresden is a Bach city in category C.

If there is a leader in category C of all Bach cities, then it should be this dreamlike city on the river Elbe. How much Bach would have loved to work here for the King of Poland, who was, beside of that, Elector of Saxony too. How much he wished to be called, on the one hand to be able to leave Leipzig plus, to go on working in a magnificent city, on the other hand it would have been exciting for him to work at a court of a king. Plus, believe or not, this king was August I plus August II. One person = two Augusts. Funny, read more about that situation with a click here.

Here in Dresden, once one of the most memorable music contests in history took place. There only were two opponents, that was on the one side the relatively unknown Johann Sebastian Bach working in the little sovereignty of Saxony-Weimar, on the other side there was a musician who was working at the court of the King of France at the court of Versailles close to Paris. Everybody who had to take a deep breath, when reading the term of "unknown": I added "relatively" and compared to Versailles? Who won the contest? Even more, why the winner won the contest, that is what you may figure out at a different place of this website. Try a short biography, but it's not mentioned in the two shortest short biographies.

It's a fact, Bach was in Dresden, he performed in Dresden, and he was celebrated in Dresden and even more. That means: Dresden is a Bach city. And what a Bach city.

4     Info About the Bach City of Dresden

You were suspicious, and you are right. None of the Bach cities and Bach places on this website isn't presented in a very positive way. One city more, another city may be a little less. That is necessary to know for what follows now. I was traveling really much, in an area which I call "Bach Country" today. Or, when I am not fooling around, I call it "The Land of the Bache". If you are a cross boarder, the "e" is no spelling mistake, it's the back then plural of Bach. On my trips I have seen and experienced grandiose cities, places, buildings and architectural treasures. I really searched for them, explored them and took photos of them. Truckloads of photos. For one Bach city, all these characterizations are not matching, as this city impresses beyond the words above. This is the city of Dresden. As a photographer, you stop stunning in front of just one gorgeous building. However, in front of a row of magnificent buildings, me as a photographer, I was speechless. Plus, if you get the feeling, you discover historic treasures not only in one row, but in two, three, even four rows, one behind another, then it's just breathtaking.

In the year 1724 Johann Sebastian Bach has been in Gera. He inspected even two organs on this trip. These were the organs in the Johannis Church plus the one in the Salvator Church. In 1780 both churches burnt down and only the Salvator Church was rebuilt. Still today a memorial tablet in the church nave and a memory in the so-called Ratskeller, the cellar of the town hall, a restaurant remind of the visit of this exceptional composer in their town.
