Bach's Complete Works, Bach Complete Edition, Bach Old Complete Edition. No, that's right – you remember – with Bach, nothing is straightforward. Because, in addition, the internet has its own rules, you sometimes end up – while browsing and searching –at the Bach Complete Edition. Even when you're actually looking for Bach's Complete Works. And why would you be looking for the Bach Complete Edition? Perhaps because you actually meant the Bach Complete Works. Or you’re looking for the Complete Edition, knowing what that is. But you don’t know exactly what it’s called ... what you just can’t seem to find. Complicated? Yes, ... indeed. Very complicated. I strongly believe, outside the German-speaking area, there are no two word combinations, what in German is "Bach Gesamtwerk" and "Bach Gesamtausgabe". The first is the music to listen to, the second is the sheet music. In English, both is the "Bach Complete Enditon"..
The Bach-Gesamtwerk from the music label Brilliant Classics, which isn't called “Bach Gesamtwek, but rather “J.S. Bach Complete Edition.” That ... doesn't really make things any easier, though..

You can still buy three editions from recent years from this music publisher Brilliant Classic anywhere today. Brand new and in their original packaging ... naturally. The curious thing is that the oldest version is sometimes offered at downright exorbitant prices. And this despite the fact that it isn't more valuable or even better than the two versions released later. On the contrary: Just as many things improve over time, the most recent edition from 2014 is also an optimized version. And the one before that is already an optimized edition of the first one. By the way, the set now includes well under 150 CDs, without a single Bach work missing. The first answer to the question above: By “Bach’s Gesamtwerk,” a Bach lover and a Bach connoisseur means Bach’s works as hearable music. You can put this together yourself ... with a lot, a great deal of research, time, energy, and money. Or you can buy it – and at a bargain price, too – "in one go". Please note: If you are looking for Bach’s music to listen to, then your goal is the Bach-Gesamtwerk or Bach Complete Edition..
The Bach-Gesamtwerk is the blue box, much further up on this page. Here are the six free add-ons. In the top row of the images, it’s the Bach Biography for Children available as downloads. At the bottom left is the Bach-Gesamtausgabe (... in this case, as shown in the photo above, in print with a red cover; however, it is not included in the offer in this way, so not in print). In the middle of the bottom row is the download for a 70-minute audio collection of Bach quotes. Finally, at the bottom right is the audiobook featuring the first short biography about Bach from 1750..
Okay, just for you English speaking guys. We learned that Gesamtwerk and Gesamtausgabe are actually two same terms, but the Bach science decided to reserve one for the music of Bach, one for the music sheets of Bach. All three terms in this headline are valid for three editions of the music sheets..
Bach’s work had “somehow been lost” after 1750. Until Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy – also a significant composer and Bach enthusiast – “rediscovered” him for a broad audience after many decades. And thus ushered in the so-called worldwide Bach Renaissance. To prevent this from happening again, the Leipzig Bach Society was founded (... please note: This was not today’s Bach Society, that is, not the New Bach Society) with the goal of cataloging Bach’s work and then dissolving itself..
Then: For a full 80 years, no one wanted to listen to Bach’s work. After 1750, his music was simply no longer hip, no longer in demand ... in other words, old-fashioned. However, Bach’s work was never “truly lost” – that is, untraceable – like a Bach monument in Berlin..
In collaboration with the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house, the collection today known as the “Old Bach Gesamtausgabe” was compiled over nearly half a century, from 1851 to 1899. Of course, it wasn’t called the “Old ...” back then. It took 48 years to “tinker with” this edition, compiling, correcting, printing, and publishing it in 61 bound volumes..
More than 50 years later, it had already become the “Old Bach-Gesamtausgabe.” For the next Bach committee felt it was time for a new edition. Naturally optimized. Because so much had been discovered in the meantime: It was accordingly named the New Bach-Gesamtausgabe. The first volume appeared in 1954, and “already” a full 57 years later, the last one was completed in 2007. A total of 96 volumes in all..
Now, already three years after the latest volume of the New Bach-Gesamtausgabe was published, the folks in Leipzig were once again in the mood to “launch” the next edition: the Revised New Bach-Gesamtausgabe. So ... the work really never ends ... and it won’t for the next 50 years either..
The first difference is easy to explain. Of course, there is Bach Science. And over the course of 50 years – or even 100 years – it has uncovered quite a bit about Bach. Meanwhile, the New Bach-Gesamtausgabe now also included several facsimiles of the original sources. And there was a “critical report” on each of these ... in every volume. That should suffice as information here, and anyone who wants to know the exact details is in good hands at Wikipedia. And also – here’s the link again – in a publication by Bärenreiter Publishers, Kassel..
The second difference: The Old Bach- Gesamtausgabe was published by the Leipzig Bach Society and released by Breitkopf & Härtel. The New Bach-Gesamtausgabe, on the other hand, was initiated by the Johann Sebastian Bach Institute in Göttingen – which no longer exists since 2006 – and the Leipzig Bach Archive, known worldwide among Bach enthusiasts. It was printed “in this round” by the renowned Bärenreiter Publishing House. And this Bärenreiter Publishing House, along with the Bach Archive today, is also responsible for the current “Revised New Bach-Gesamtausgabe.”..
Thirdly, however – and this is of the utmost importance to us ordinary people – that is, if you’re not concerned with every last scientific detail ... and, while we’re at it, fourthly, the three versions differ quite significantly in two areas: first, the purchase price, if you want to own the full set of 50 volumes, and second, the copyright. More on that later..
This is exactly what it looks like today: a version of the “Old Bach- Gesamtausgabe.” But it’s also available with a blue cover, a green one, a red one, and, as you can see above, a historically brown one. These volumes are either authentic – that is, “old,” historic, and some nearly falling apart – or they come in a newer binding: old paper in a new cover..
So, while we can conclude that for 99.99 percent of all Bach lovers, Bach fans, students, musicians, teachers, and professors, the Old Bach Complete Edition is perfectly adequate in terms of content and scholarship, there are two other compelling reasons to consider: First, you can compile this Old Bach Complete Edition yourself online, purchase it from a vendor for around € 134, or receive it free of charge as a bonus when buying from Bach 4 You. However ... not the New one. This “works” because we, the Bachs from Flein in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, were permitted to reproduce it in Leipzig, at the Music Library. And that is exactly what we did. Even more important than the library’s permission, however, is the public domain status of the work itself. More than 115 years after the publication of the last volume, this status is certainly established. That is why the following was and remains possible: 25 hours of photography, followed by weeks of post-processing, repackaging, offering it as a free bonus ... and that’s it..
The situation is different with the New Bach-Gesamtausgabe. Completed in 2007, it will certainly not enter the public domain for at least the next half-century. And the Revised New Complete Edition of Bach? Not before the year 2100. How fortunate that you can at least buy this New Bach-Gesamtausgabe: new for as little as € 10,000, used for around € 7,000 to € 9,000. But you can’t do that directly from the Renate Bach Publishing House, not at Bach 4 You..
You can spread your expenses out nicely and evenly if you want to own the Revised New Bach Complete Edition at some point in the distant future. Only a few volumes of it are currently available, each priced at € 600. The estimated 90 or so remaining volumes will be published over the next few years and in the coming decades. However, it will not be a complete replacement, as not all volumes will be "completely reworked"..
The Old Bach-Gesamtausgabe in blue cover..
A small portion of the Old Bach-Gesamtausgabe in green cover, right next to the ne in blue cover and next to the von in the brown cover, in the econd row..
Plus finally in a light brown cover: the complete New Bach-Gesamtausgabe from the years 1954 until 2007..
The "Bach-Gesamtwerk" or the "Bach Complete Edition" from the year 2007, however, it's still today available as new..
There is no question that the quality and compilation of this latest edition is superb. The music label Brilliant Classics itself states on its website regarding this edition: “There is no noticeable difference in quality compared to competing high-priced complete editions.” And … we Bachs can only agree without further comment..
But let’s get to the headline: How exactly do you support our Johann Sebastian Bach Mission with your purchase? It’s actually quite simple: Our Bach Mission costs money ... a lot of money. Often, we simply can’t continue because our quarterly funds have run out. That’s why we refinance. That’s the very reason the Renate Bach Publishing House Bach 4 You exists. And you can truly support us. You can always expect quality. And, of course, very personal service. You won’t be speaking on the phone with “just any” Publishing House employee. You’ll be speaking with Renate Bach or with Peter Bach, Jr. (... who, after all, is a contributing author and therefore not an employee of the Publishing House.)..
We’re also happy to respond to your emails. We’ll take care of it if something arrives damaged. Or even if it gets lost. Or if you don’t like something after all, or if you’d prefer another item from our shop. Our next planned projects involve offering many, many products featuring personalized Bach themes and motifs..

A highlight in Peter Bach, Jr.’s 40-year career as a photographer: his “personal Mt. Everest” on a rainy Tuesday in Leipzig. Nine hours of continuous photography, one photo every five seconds..
A total of 25 hours spent bent over on three consecutive days. 16,800 ancient, historic pages: The Old Bach Gesamtausgabe (...Old Bach Complete Edition) “takes its toll.” By now, you know the difference between the Bach Gesamtausgabe and the Bach Gesamtwerk and can picture what they look like..
A delight to look at: the title pages of the individual works in the “Old Bach Gesamtausgabe”..
The "Old Bach Gesamtausgabe": Three more examples of cover sheets coming with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach..
This is what 99 percent of all the sheet music pages in the “Old Bach Gesamtausgabe” look like. There are also a few pages of text, along with a brief summary. And as you can see in the next few images, only a handful of pages feature Johann Sebastian Bach’s actual original handwriting..
Don't worry: These original sheets of music by Bach would be almost impossible to read as they are. But at least a few of them are still quite fascinating..
Since that was so nice, here’s another example: On the left is a sheet of music featuring a successful composition. In the middle, you can see what the result looked like when Bach had plenty of time. And finally, on the right is one of his works that he stopped liking shortly afterward..
The “Bach Music Gesamtwerk,” plus the “Old Bach Gesamtausgabe,” and then five more Bach add-ons? Can I be more specific? Sure thing! The set above is by far the best edition from the “Brillant Classic” music label as the latest “Complete Works of Bach.” If that isn’t the “Bach offer of the century,” what is?! Take a look at these Bach add-ons – beyond the Bach biography for kids – in the “Bach 4 You” shop..
