She came from nearby Gehren in Thuringia and was the daughter of Gehren’s well-known cantor, Johann Michael Bach. It is not known whether Johann Sebastian Bach met her at one of the many regular family gatherings of the Bache family or during his time in Arnstadt. What is relatively certain, however, is that the woman whom Johann Sebastian Bach had sing – that is, perform – in the church in Arnstadt, an unprecedented act at the time, was likely Maria Barbara.
