Bach FAQ 104
To the point: Bach composed 1.128 still preserved compositions..
If you're curious about how many works – that is, how many compositions – Johann Sebastian Bach composed, respectively wrote, then you might as well take this opportunity to find out how many works every one of these famous Classical Composers created..
Wie oben schon erwähnt, erschuf Johann Sebastian Bach also 1.128 Werke.
How many works did Bach compose? 1,128. Here is an illustration very loosely based on Haußmann. Initially, according to the BWV, there were 1,080. In the years after 1950, some were added and others were removed from the list. This is because they were not actually composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. The current total? 1,128, as mentioned..

In 2011, the New York Times (NYT) selected the very best among the ten greatest Classical Composers. However, the selection was not based on the sheer volume of works. That’s hardly a measure of quality in this field anyway. And certainly not when it comes to these masters. It should also be noted that the selection of these ten masters alone is highly subjective. There are certainly people who feel that one or the other composer is clearly missing. More so than Classical Music enthusiasts who are just as satisfied with the selection of the ten..
By the way, Johann Sebastian Bach won. But that’s not the answer to the question we’re asking on this page with this FAQ. So: How many works did these ten famous Classical Composers create? And how many did they leave behind for posterity?..
The great German composer, whom the New York Times ranked “only” number 2, composed 650+ works in his lifetime. This is information I initially got from Wikipedia ... as I usually do in the most cases. But I wanted to have it confirmed. A warm reply came promptly from the Beethoven Festival House in Bonn, Germany: It’s on their website. Right at the top, in fact: Ludwig van Beethoven’s artistic oeuvre comprises over 650 compositions. These are counted as 138 works with opus numbers (op.) and 205 works without opus numbers (WoO). Since 138 plus 205 does not equal 650, this was also explained in a flash by the most authoritative source: Behind many opus numbers lies quite simply more than just one work. For example, Opus 10 comprises three works, and Opus 18 as many as six. And together, that makes? 650+ musical works..
The master, who was born in Bonn, Germany. He composed over 650 works. Ludwig van Beethoven died in Vienna. At the age of 57..
Of course, the best place to find out is in Austria. This is also necessary to meet the standards of accuracy on this Johann Sebastian Bach portal. And where exactly in Austria? In Salzburg, of course ... Mozart’s birthplace. Or perhaps also in Germany? And who was able to help answer the question, “How many compositions did Mozart write?” The German Mozart Society was the right place to turn. A big thank you to them: There are 626 compositions. By the way, Mozart was not the inventor of the world-famous sweets that nevertheless bear his name: Mozartkugels..
No, he didn't invent the famous Mozartkugels. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756, six years after Bach's death. He died in Vienna at the age of 35. Do you remember: How many works did Mozart compose?..
The Franz. The Franz Peter, actually. How many works did he leave to the world? How many compositions did he wrote long after he was born in Vienna? He, too – we have to consider that – wrote everything in a very short lifetime, 32 years. At this age, he died in Vienna, where he was born, too. The Schubert Catalog of Works by Otto Erich Deutsch lists a total of 998 compositions in this short time. A short time period, because he didn't compose as early as age 3, of course. Where does this information come from? From a competent institution, namely the Viennese Library in the town hall. Thanks for that..
Mr. Schubert from Austria. How many works he composed ... we know that now..

So how many did he write? Bach’s colleague from France, who was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1862 and died in Paris 56 years later? He composed 75 works ... some of them world-class. This is confirmed by the author of the website “The German Debussy Pages.” Thank you, Jochen Scheytt..
Monsieur Claude Debussy..
If that isn't international flair, I don't know what is! After all, we've had Austrian, French, and German composers. And now we even have a Russian top musician. Well, he was born in Russia, but later spent his time in France, Switzerland, and finally in the United States..
Igor was born in Russia and died in New York. So, according to Wikipedia, he was a Russian-French-American. And he was a Classical Composer of the so-called “New Music” style..
He composed 152 works. And he was even awarded an honorary doctorate by an American university for his work. At first, by the way, I could only find – and even that was a struggle – 45 pieces that he had composed. Later, when I was revising these pages again, I came across the website Klassika.info. As I read through my page again and again, looking for errors, I also visited their site and was able to “add” another 100 or so works. Because all of Stravinsky’s works are listed there. So instead of just 45, there are now a full 152. Thank you, Klassika.info..
Brahms, again a German composer. He was born in 1833 and died three years before the turn of the century. He left the music world over 352 works. His most successful composition was the “German Requiem,” which he composed in 1870. They are all listed in a research paper – all works – covered in some depth. And when added up, the total is the number above, namely the aforementioned “at least” 352 works: orchestral works (8), concertos (4), chamber music (16 works), piano works (8), smaller Classical Works (35), piano pieces for four hands (... who has something like that? ... there were 39), chamber works for strings (8), choral works (... at least 6), and piano songs, including 49 German folk songs (... at least 228). Another source – again the Klassika website – lists only 122 compositions under the heading “Johannes Brahms Catalog of Works.” But there is yet another source – also on Klassika.info – namely the Works Sorted by McCorkle. And I’ll go through these compositions and count them over the next few weeks. Maybe then we’ll know ... even more precisely..
That’s Mr. Brahms, another genius. Do we still remember? How many works did Bach compose? How many compositions did Beethoven write? And how many works did Mozart leave behind? How many works did Debussy compose? And finally: How many compositions did Schubert leave us? And now, guess or estimate how many works Verdi once produced. That’s right, Verdi is still to come. So, to sum up: Bach 1,128; Beethoven 650; Mozart 626; Debussy 75; Schubert 998..
The first significant Italian composer in our circle. Born in 1813 in the Duchy of Le Roncole, died in 1901 in Milan. He is best known for his operas. All in all, Verdi composed 53 works. And am I sure about that? Yup, because once again the website Klassika.info was an excellent source. A big thank you to the editorial team..
Signore Verdi entered "the race" with 53 compositions..
One of the absolute giants of his guild. According to the New York Times, however, he is “barely making the cut.” Richard Wagner composed a total of 113 works. And this is confirmed by none other than the Richard Wagner Museum in Bayreuth..
Richard Wagner. What a personality. What great music. How many works did he compose? If you can't remember, scroll back up..
Well, I would have thought of a different number 10. And Bartók fans would certainly have liked to see him ranked higher. Whatever. What does interest us? We’re interested in how many compositions Bartók wrote. In other words: How many works did Bartók compose? There are exactly at least 129 pieces. And who helped me arrive at this figure? Klassika.info, once again. And ... why “at least”? Because in the breakdown by musical genre, for example, “Hungarian peasant songs” are listed. Without specifying the number. And “Romanian folk dances” as well. Again, without specifying the number. And so, when you add them up, the term “at least” is placed before these general categories. Thank you for all your hard work, Klassika.info editorial team..
Béla Bartók. He is the Hungarian within the circle of famous Classical Composers. And do we still remember? How many works did Béla Bartók compose?..
The KlassikAkzente website not only offers a completely different selection of Classical Composers than the New York Times, but – with its engaging layout – also serves as a great resource for learning more about the musicians featured there. Just as the composers listed there were chosen based on personal taste, I too have made a selection that now goes beyond the NYT’s ten “candidates.” Surely you would replace one or the other with the composer of your choice. But I have made a selection based precisely on popularity. And whether composer 18 is better known than composer 19 is a matter that could be hotly disputed. But let’s not do that. Right?..
The Händel-Werke-Verzeichnis (... Catalogue of Handel's Works) lists 627 works. Of these, 612 are in the main section and 15 in the appendix. So far, so good. Among them are 42 operas, each lasting three to four hours. But there are also pieces consisting of just twelve bars. Some major works exist in different versions; the significance of these numbers is therefore quite relative. Furthermore, there is debate regarding whether certain pieces are actually by Handel. However, the number of these disputed works is – judging by the intensity of the discussions – relatively small, to my knowledge. With around 600 works, the figure is probably pretty much exact. If one wants to settle on a rough estimate for Handel. With Bach, the number is over a thousand, but the proportion of shorter works varies. So the two figures are only comparable to a very limited extent..
The information above comes from the Handel House Foundation in Halle on the Saale. And I was so thrilled by the fascinating information I received from them – even though I had actually only asked about the number of works – that I “modified and added” to the content a bit (... every little joke springs from my creativity). My thanks go to the artistic director of the Handel Festival and especially to Dr. Musketa for the information. Click here to visit the foundation’s great website again, where you can also find the festival program. Oh, and by the way, George Frideric Handel was born just 26 days before Johann Sebastian Bach, but lived a full nine years longer. He reached the impressive age of 74. Back then, such a long life was extraordinary..
How many works did Handel compose? That was the question. And ... do you still remember?..

A Pole is at the starting line. Unfortunately, he only gifted the world with his works until the age of 39. He died in Paris in 1849. Max Hölzl gave me – and us – the crucial tip: Count the works on his Frédérik Chopin website, specifically on the “Catalog of Works” page. There, you’ll find exactly 203 pieces. Thank you, Max Hölzl..
The Polish composer Chopin. Do you still remember his first name? And if so, do you also remember how many pieces of music he composed? How many musical works did Chopin compose?..
Antonio Vivaldi composed exactly 816 works. And how do we know that for sure? In Canada, you can get help with this, and you can check it yourself on the relevant website. And how do you get there? Just click here..
Signore Vivaldi. With 816 works, he ranks in the upper middle tier. In terms of quantity, of course..
Today’s Bach fans owe everything to Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Without him, Johann Sebastian Bach might have fallen completely into oblivion. It was Felix who presented the St. Matthew Passion to an enthusiastic audience for the first time since its premiere ... exactly 100 years later, to the day. Perhaps it was even at the same time, exactly 100 years later! For both of these special days for Bach’s music were Good Fridays. However, Bach scholars have “messed up” this round anniversary a bit: A few years ago, based on the more than 300 years that have passed so far, it was discovered that they had “miscalculated” the date of the first performance. By two years. And now there are exactly 102 years between them. But again, probably to the hour, on the same day. Too bad, too bad ... that was really an exciting number at first..
By the way: Felix was born in Hamburg in 1809. He died at the age of just 38 in the musical metropolis of Leipzig. That was in 1847. And how many works did Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy compose? Around 750 compositions. Where can you find such a reliable answer? From the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Foundation at the Mendelssohn House in Leipzig. And to the museum management there: a heartfelt thank you for that. The website: well worth a visit and exploration. And one more note: These 750 works have been compiled under the title Mendelssohn Catalogue of Works (MWV) by Ralf Wehner and published by Breitkopf & Härtel..
Bach fans around the world owe him a tremendous debt of thanks: Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy..
Once again, Klassika.info is a veritable treasure trove (... though it doesn’t provide a “concise figure.” But I’m probably the only one who would want that, since I lack a bit of musical maturity for it ... just kidding). According to Humphrey Searle’s catalog of works, published in 1996 and spanning 701 pages ... 701 works. To this we must add works whose authorship is not definitively established or that have been lost, and he had also planned four more works. Furthermore ... it should be noted that in this count, Liszt often wrote works in multiple versions. However, these are each counted separately in the Searle catalog. Thank you, Klassika.info..
There are really a lot of portraits of Liszt. We decided to have this artwork above made based on a picture of Liszt when he was still very young. Thank you, Vivian..
Renate Grasberger’s catalog of works lists 149 compositions. But we’ve come to “love” the information on Klassika.info so much that we wanted to check there as well: And there we read ... sorted by the individual WAB disciplines (...see above), musical genre, period of composition, and titles: There are 156 today. A slight discrepancy, but we don’t want to be too strict about it here. One last click takes us to Johannes Hanstein’s compilation. There are 153 there ... how extremely diplomatic is that?!..
Like there is the BWV for Bach works, three is a WAB for Anton Bruckner works. Renate Grasberger published it in 1977..
About 250 pieces. And he was the “inventor” of the Viennese waltz. His most famous work today is the “Radetzky March.” And the source for this is good old ( ? ) ... Wikipedia. This time, the discrepancy with the list on Klassika.info is enormous: There, you’ll find only 18 works. But ... at least the “Radetzky March” is included..
If you, too, have trouble remembering which of the two Johann Strausses is the father and which is the son, then just remember it the way I do: Papa Strauss is the serious one with the conservative hairstyle. Son Strauss looks like a little rebel*. So ... do you still remember how many works Strauss, Sr. (... or I ) composed?..
* = Not really of course, but if you compare both it's just a cool memory hook..
He composed 480 dance pieces and 17 stage works, including 15 operettas. His most beautiful works are “The Blue Danube,” “Tales from the Vienna Woods,” “Viennese Blood,” “Die Fledermaus,” and, of course, “The Gypsy Baron.” This makes Strauss, Jr. the world-famous “King of the Waltz.”..
There was a time when this look was all the rage. In Austria..

Yet another Classical Composer who left us with quality over quantity. Once again, I’m relying on Klassika.info and, based on Johannes Hanstein’s catalog of works –which helped us arrive at that cool, diplomatic figure earlier on – I’ve tallied up 263 masterpieces, 263 compositions. Written by Strauss No. 3..
Richard, the third Strauss in our presentation. What a shame he isn’t related to the Strausses mentioned above. If he were, they would climb much higher in the rankings as a family of composers or musicians. But of course … that’s nonsense. So the person mentioned above is definitely not the son or grandchild of those two Strausses? No, it’s … Richard, that’s all..
“Stars and Stripes”: Americans are certainly familiar with this composition. But anyone who enjoys Classical Music is likely just as familiar with the melody. This piece is practically the national anthem of the United States. Sousa, who was enlisted in the military by his father at the age of 13, is also known as the “King of March Music”. Even Klassika cannot provide a complete list of his works this time. But in the body of the text we learn: He composed 136 works. Marches and other works as well. For example, 15 operettas. Sousa saw himself as a workhorse and once said, in essence: If word got out that John Philip Sousa had retired, then he must have died unnoticed..
Sousa. More specifically? John Philip Sousa. This is the perfect place to send my warmest regards to all my visitors from the United States of America..
Haydn composed around 750 to 800 works. What kinds of compositions were these? These include approximately 104 symphonies, 68 string quartets, about 52 to 62 piano sonatas, roughly 13 to 15 operas, 14 masses, 3 major oratorios (such as The Creation), and “a few other works”: divertimenti, trios, songs, church music, and much more. Some have been lost, others have been handed down in duplicate, and there are also pieces that have been misattributed. Of course, every now and then one finds another work by him. And if you take all of that into account, then there are roughly exactly 750 to 800 pieces..
Thank you for the wonderful music, Mr. Haydn..

How many works did Bernstein compose? A manageable 26. If I haven’t miscounted. According to the list from Klassika. But... research continues, and so you find on Wikipedia ... the List of Compositions by Leonard Bernstein. And there are an incredible (... compared to the previous number) 107 compositions. Perhaps the most famous work? West Side Story..
Leonhardt Bernstein..
Hector Berlioz, a Frenchman, a composer, and also a music critic: He was born in 1803 and died in 1869. He was also called Beethoven’s unrecognized successor. He left behind not quite as many compositions, but ones that were truly beautiful. Would you like to know the number now? And then move on to the next composer? The master created 57 compositions..
Composer and musician Berlioz, painted by Vivian..
So, where does this lead us? That’s right, once again to Klassika. And I’ve added up the numbers for you: There are 66 works. On top of that, there’s what’s called an “unidentified stage work”, whatever that means. Thanks for the research, Klassika..
Mr. Compositore Giacomo Puccini. A top composer from beautiful Italy. And the offspring of a family of musicians that has not yet been featured on the “Bach über Bach” website under the section on famous musical families. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all musicians..
Composer Bellini, who was born in Sicily in 1801, produced a relatively manageable number of compositions. We head to Klassika and count 29 works over the course of his 34-year life. Good job, Vincenzo..
The master from “bella Italia”. Did you know that he and Johann Sebastian Bach share the space on an Italian postage stamp?..
Well, let’s take a look at the Russian music archive. And let’s add operas, orchestral works, chamber music, piano works, vocal-instrumental works, vocal works, transcriptions, and orchestrations. We’ll also include the well-known but lost works. And together, we come up with a total of 240 works..
There are many websites dedicated to the Russian pianist, composer, and conductor, and Wikipedia actually leads the way with the search terms “Catalog of Works” and “Rachmaninoff.” We, however, will take a look at the German website “Russian Music Archive.”..
Ravel “could do more than just Bolero.” Including arrangements, the French composer left us a total of 149 works before he died in Paris at the age of 62. Did you know that “Bolero” was originally conceived as ballet music? Nope? Why would you?!..

So, was Max Reger – who is now associated with the city of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate in Germany –
“only” enthusiastic about Bach, or was he creative himself? You bet. Very creative, in fact. On Klassika and Wikipedia, right at the top, you’ll find a list of the masterpieces Max Reger left behind. And there are 474 pieces. That ... is quite a lot!..
Max Reger came up with one of the coolest quotes about our Johann Sebastian Bach. And we still have it today in his own handwriting. That’s unique. No other quote about JSB exists like this: “Bach is the beginning and the end of all music.”..
It just had to be here: the quote of Max Reger..
Of course, we click over to Klassika. After all, we’ve found what we’re looking for there so many times before, and the first thing that catches our eye is that the list begins with “works published during his lifetime.” And we’re curious to see what the counterpart is: Further down, we finally learn about the so-called posthumous works. We haven’t seen that before, so I begin my count. The master created a total of 529 works, though this number, of course, doesn’t match the final opus number, 148, because some opuses list as many as 3, 5, 7, or 10 individual works. Incidentally, the total of 529 includes the posthumous works. After all, Schumann created those as well..
Robert Schumann. This composer is closely associated with the city of Zwickau in Saxony, Germany. In 1810, the year of his birth, Zwickau was still part of the Kingdom of Saxony. In the year he married his wife, the pianist Clara Wieck, he wrote nearly 150 songs..

The Nutcracker. Who doesn’t know those melodies? It’s certainly his most famous musical work of all. But all in all, the master has composed no fewer than 333 pieces. As you know ... a number I love..
Mr. Tschaikovsky. Peter Iljitsch. Or Pjotrr Iljitsch. He was born in Russia, he died in Russia, what is not that common among our composers ... they loved to travel. And some of them emigrated..
Beyond the shared “Ave Maria” by Bach and Gounod, the composer – who originally had no intention of becoming a composer at all– created a fairly modest number of musical works. We check at ... well, this is getting a bit boring ... and add up: 28 compositions. But we also know: It’s not the quantity that matters. It’s the quality. Besides, the “competition” over who wrote the most pieces is nothing more than a piece of “nonsense” I made up myself..
Mister Gounod. Monsieur Charles Gounod. Frenchman. Music genius..
He was busy, this composer from Northern Germany that was drawn to the British across the Channel. He created around 600 works, if you include all his variations, and why shouldn’t you?!..
We associate London with his work, but he was actually born near Lübeck in Germany. His mom was an opera singer, and his dad made up his own noble title – that little “von” – on his own. Dad was also a musician, and he made money by presenting his little Carl Maria as a musical prodigy. Is that really what you do with gifted kids? But ... just look at everything Carl Maria von Weber left behind for future generations! 600 pieces..
It’s almost hard to believe: Unlike the images above, there is no picture of this giant of composition. Why not? Because every project begins at some point, and Mr. Telemann – for whatever reason – simply slipped through my fingers. I had never heard of him, never read about him. And on a website about Johann Sebastian Bach... why would I need to? Of course, when my wife and her Publishing House began specializing in composers, we could have thought of him. But we didn’t. And so, no painting in the style of the images above was ever created of him by Vivian, who created the others..
However, I’ve always remembered something the music expert at the Bach House in Eisenach said – it was quite a few years ago – when the conversation turned to the number of musical works composed by composers in general. He mentioned that Telemann was also one of the most productive. And so we’d like to award him this well-deserved No. 1 spot. Telemann, not the music educator from Eisenach, who helped me not only with this information but time and time again. Many thanks especially to the Bach House..
Now it’s time to “buckle up,” so to speak. Because what follows has little to do with the additions mentioned earlier. Telemann composed 1,860 church cantatas alone, and with his “Opus 37,” they spared themselves the trouble of counting. It’s a “funny mishmash” in the TWV, the Telemann Works Catalog (... Verzeichnis). We’ll now do the math using Google’s calculator..
All in all, that’s 3,496 musical works!!! That ... is absolutely amazing, meaning that Telemann has easily left behind three times as many musical works as Bach. And Bach was quite the workaholic. The only thing ... is that ... so many of Bach’s works have been lost. But ... that’s just the way it is..
