Are There Very Famous Bach Critics As Well?..
The problem – with this question – and with the critics is the word “famous”. Because that excludes all the city council members in Leipzig who, without exception, criticized Bach at the time and with whom Bach did not get along in Leipzig..
But there was one famous person whose opinion—in contrast to the admiration of everyone else—can be classified as criticism. That is Mr. Composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who said of Bach’s work: “I can certainly say that I enjoy playing Bach. Because playing a good fugue is entertaining. But I do not see him as a great genius.”..
At least Johann Sebastian Bach got off relatively well. Compared to Gounod, whose works, with the exception of Faust, Tchaikovsky found poor. And also compared to Liszt, whose compositions “left him cold.” Finally, he said of Verdi’s works that they were “tasteless barrel-organ tunes”..
Well ... Johann Sebastian Bach really got lucky there..
