By the way, this page on my website is a compilation of information from an English Wikipedia page, the German Wikipedia entry, and several other websites, most of which are listed in the section below the rankings. More on this below the first list..
First, of course, you’ll find what you’re looking for in the top Google search results. But in addition to that, there are also my own findings on the World Wide Web. None of the lists mentioned above is even remotely complete or consistently accurate. The English Wikipedia differs significantly from the German version, and I also believe that many organ builders – listed in the German Wikipedia – are not musicians at all, with their organ building dynasties..
On top of that, one of the “eligibility requirements” is that the group must consist of more than two brothers or a married couple of musicians (… so, for example, the Carpenters, Albano and Romina Power, and Cindy and Bert … are not allowed! Three brothers, on the other hand, is okay). Also not “eligible” as a musical family in my ( ! ) list are combinations of two brothers who perform together with two brothers from another family. Father or mother plus son or daughter is fine. Because we don’t want a list consisting of hundreds of names; rather, we’re interested in the fascinating groups of people that nature has produced..
So here it is: the most comprehensive list of musical families anywhere. However, you can – or rather, must – decide for yourself which of these 85 families is the second-most famous musical family (… since there is no third list further down). But which is the largest, famous, or well-known musical family is not a matter of opinion. In fact, this list is more about covering the largest possible number and ensuring completeness. (as of 2020) two of the musical families mentioned above are “movie and TV musical families”: that is the Partridge Family, which was produced a few decades ago, and the Trapp Family, from a generation earlier. Regarding this, my “fun contribution,” I have read, however, that the TV series “The Partridge Family” is based on the life of a real musical family, which I would never have found had I not published my nonsense here. It is the American Cowsill Family, who celebrated massive success with various songs..
;>) ... (as of 2026). There actually was a Trapp Family who also served as the inspiration for the movie’s family. They toured Germany before 1938, then moved to Austria and eventually to the U.S. because they opposed German National Socialism. In the movie, there were seven children singing with their mother. In real life, the group ranged in size from seven to ten members due to the age differences among the kids: They performed with varying lineups. In the U.S., they performed under the name Trapp Family Singers..
The Bachs are still, and the Mozarts were prominent musical families. Gounod was the only one in his family who played music. And the man on the far right? I’ll leave it at that for now..
