No, on the contrary. There are very few letters by Johann Sebastian Bach at all. There are two or three – perhaps four – that were written in his own hand and still exist. Compared to the correspondence of other great figures in music, science, and politics, this is a meager, very meager legacy..
And that is precisely why so little is known about Bach ... especially the “private” Johann Sebastian Bach. Reading Johann Sebastian’s letter to Georg Erdmann alone – which reveals what was troubling the great composer during his time in Leipzig – gives us a sense of just how much better informed future generations would be today if there were at least a few more letters from that period..
