Bach FAQ 87
Many. Many more, than you think in the very first moment. Did you know, that there are actually two originals of the most famous painting of painter Haußmann alone?..
Let's rephrase the question in this chapter a little. So that it can actually be answered. After all, the picture on the left is also a painting of Bach, but surely that's not the kind of painting you had in mind?!..
How many paintings, drawings, engravings, and sketches by artists of varying degrees of prominence ...who are no longer with us today ... or perhaps they still are ...are there, after all? Now we’re getting somewhere..
First of all, there are what are probably the best-known paintings by Haußmann, Ihle, and Rentsch. In addition, there is the so-called “portrait of old age.”..
But there are far more works depicting the Thomas Cantor than is generally known. The fascinating thing is that only one of these—that is, of all the paintings—namely the best-known one by Haußmann, portrays the musician as he actually looked. All the other depictions stem, in a way, from ... imagination..
Dr. Jörg Hansen, director of the Bach House in Eisenach, is the undisputed expert when it comes to portraits of Johann Sebastian Bach. The Bach House and the neighboring Bach Museum don’t just have a few of them on display ... there are many to see there. In fact, there are a total of 124 historical representations of Bach..
I like to categorize the painters of Bach portraits into “leagues.” Only Haußmann plays in the top league, for the reason I mentioned earlier. Then there’s the second league: these are the paintings by Rentsch, Ihle, and the portrait of Bach in his old age. Many publishers and journalists fall back on this league so as not to always have to refer to the “old Haußmann.” In the third league, there are numerous other portraits of Bach. Bach experts are certainly familiar with them. The painters include some notable names. However, they are not comparable to the masters in the second league. This third league also includes other historical portraits of Bach that are occasionally reproduced and that were not painted by well-known artists..
In the fourth league, my website is a total blast. There, Bach artists living all over the world have created works for us: watercolors, comics, drawings, and motifs in a wide variety of famous artistic styles, such as those of Dalí, van Gogh, and Miró. Undoubtedly, Briana Bach-Hertzog ... whose portrait of Bach also graces this website ... is the most gifted of these artists. And finally... I, too, have contributed my own works, which by themselves now fill three Bach calendars..
