Bach FAQ 107
To the point: Yes, there are all kinds of schools named after Bach. And Bach attended school in Eisenach, Ohrdruf, and Lüneburg..
So are there schools and high schools named after Bach? And where are they? I mean Bach schools, Bach high schools, and Bach music schools? You can also find out which schools Bach attended on this page ... a little further down. And if I’ve forgotten a Johann Sebastian Bach School, a Johann Sebastian Bach High School, or a Johann Sebastian Bach Music School, please just send me an email..
Of course, there are institutions named after the master (... as mentioned above). Even if they’re not always easy to find. Well, but only until recently. Because starting now, you can of course find them all in one place. Namely, right here on my website. Because here they are all ... the Bach schools, the Bach music schools, and the Bach high schools ... all the educational institutions with the Bach musical family in their name. Or the master himself..
There are probably more schools with “Bach” in their names. Perhaps even more high schools. But they won't be missing from this page for much longer. Because here comes my request. And this has already worked well in other sections of my website..
With schools and high schools? No, with individuals who belong to the Bach family of musicians. “Getting hold of” their personal information is far more complicated than finding the name of a school or a high school. All Bach genealogists in the past “got stuck in the present, frustrated.” Because government agencies don’t release data on living Bachs ... musical family or not. But recently, family members have been able to find me: They just have to discover me first! On the internet. By googling. That works perfectly. On this Bach website, Bach on Bach..
And so I believe that, starting now and over the coming months and years, a student – or a teacher – from somewhere in Germany or abroad will send an email from time to time. And it will say: “I attend the Bach School in "So-and-so." Or the Bach High School in "So-and-so." And you don’t have them on your list yet.”..
So the list of Bach schools, Bach high schools, and Bach music schools will gradually grow longer and more complete. Of course, parents of students are also warmly invited to send me a quick email. And just like that, your Bach school or Bach high school will be included. Music schools are “allowed” as well. Kindergartens too. Basically, all similar institutions ... and of course, no matter where in the world they are located. Now I’m curious to see how long it will take before I can add the next Bach school to the first Bach schools ... and when a third Bach high school might even be added. Thank you very much in advance..

I leave the German names here, as it is their name. However, a „Grundschule“ is an elementary school, a „Musikschule“ is music school (... surprise), a "Kreismusikschule“ is a county music school. "Städtisch“ means municipal. The last position is a municipal daycare institution for children..

Johann Sebastian Bach spent his school years in three cities: first in Eisenach until he was ten years old. His next stop was Ohrdruf, after he moved in with his oldest brother. And finally, he spent two years in Lüneburg. After that, he could have attended university – for example, the one in Leipzig – since he had performed well enough to graduate from school in Lüneburg. But he didn’t..
At first, Johann Sebastian Bach received his initial music lessons from his father. Specifically, he learned to play the violin, and it is very likely that Johann Ambrosius’s brother – that is, Johann Sebastian’s uncle – taught him to play the organ. However, the Bach family home in Eisenach was not a music school at the time. Therefore, Johann Sebastian Bach did not attend music lessons there as a student. At least not in the sense of my question..
In 1693, at the age of eight, Johann Sebastian Bach attended the very same school that Martin Luther had attended before him ... some 200 years earlier. It was the Latin school in Eisenach, located in the former Dominican monastery..
In Ohrdruf, Johann Sebastian Bach attended the local Lyceum until the first year of secondary school. Starting in the second year, Georg Erdmann became his closest friend and lifelong companion..
Johann Sebastian Bach later walked to Lüneburg with his friend Georg Erdmann. He spent a full two years in northern Germany. He studied at the Michaelis School of the Michaelis Monastery. The monastery no longer exists today. The church, however, still does. He eventually graduated with excellent grades. He returned to Thuringia. Where Bach spent the next six months there is unknown. However, he likely lived during this time with his older sister in Erfurt or his eldest brother in Ohrdruf..
The school in Eisenach. A commemorative plaque honors Johann Sebastian Bach. Perhaps – and I mean just perhaps – Bach once sat in the very same chair where Martin Luther, who is also world-famous, studied diligently some two centuries before him..
At what other school did two personalities like Bach and Luther study? Here you can see it almost “in black and white”! This school is easy to find. It’s about 63 steps right above St. George’s Church. Well, give or take a few..
You can't really read it yet: the reference to Bach above the reference to Luther. It's clearer one image further down..
Here it is, the hint. That Johann Sebastian Bach was a student there and studied... when he wasn't accompanying his father. And sang to his music at weddings, funerals, baptisms, and celebrations, which is why he was often absent..

A striking wrought-iron gate is a reminder of the prominent alumnus Johann Sebastian Bach, who attended school here when the Gleichense Gymnasium was still known as the Michaelis School..
Where is our superstar, Johann Sebastian Bach?..
A small hint: There are to positions 4 on this historic page..
A surviving part of the former St. Michaelis Monastery. It might ... just perhaps ... have been part of the St. Michaelis School back then. But ... rather unlikely..
A preserved part of the back then St. Michaelis Abbey. It could be ... entirely perhaps ... a part of the former St. Michaelis School. However – rather not..
On one of the portals of St. Michael's Church, there's a plaque dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach, to the right of the lantern. Would you like to see it up close? Sorry, I didn't take a picture of it when I was there. I had no idea there was a plaque for Johann Sebastian there. I just ... messed up..
Since there aren't any photos of the school Johann Sebastian Bach attended for two years in Lüneburg, here's another cool picture of St. Michael's Church instead..

Sure, in addition, Johann Sebastian Bach sort of "attended" St. Thomas School. St. Thomas School next to the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Saxony. Here, however, he taught music. And that was for children, who - some of them - weren't even able to sing one correct tone. Said, Bach..
Well, of course, he also “attended” the St. Thomas School. The Thomasschule next to St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. Here, however, he taught music ... to kids, some of whom couldn’t even hit a single note. Bach wrote this to his school friend Erdmann. And that’s right: The contract also required Bach to teach Latin and religion..
The St. Thomas School in Leipzig. Way in the background. It’s not there anymore for a long time. The family of the Thomas Cantor lived there, and Johann Sebastian Bach taught there. For a very, very long time. The fountain in the center of the picture isn’t there anymore. Instead, the New Bach Monument stands there meanwhile..
Here you can see it more clearly: the St. Thomas School. Johann Sebastian didn’t attend it, but he taught there for a very long time. So did he actually attend this school? Or perhaps not? By the way, the Bach monument stands in front of it. More precisely, the Old Bach Monument. You can’t see the main entrance to St. Thomas Church because of the trees on the left, but now you at least know where it is..
A third perspective showing both St. Thomas School and St. Thomas Church. From here, you can now also get a good look at the church’s main entrance. However, from this angle, you can’t see the Old Bach Monument at all..
