Bach FAQ 36

Did Johann Sebastian Bach Compose Nothing But Church Music?..

No, Bach certainly did not compose only church music. This is undoubtedly true, because Bach worked for rulers for many years. And not in the service of the church. It certainly began with that first, relatively insignificant six-month period in Weimar, where Bach would later move for the second-longest stretch of his life. He spent nine years at the court of Duke Ernst in Weimar, and there, composing church music was only part of his job. From Weimar, Johann Sebastian Bach moved to work for Leopold, Prince of Köthen-Anhalt. And here, too, Bach did not compose or perform music on behalf of the church..

Some musicians, however, claim that all the music Bach composed reflects his deep religious devotion. This is true even when he wrote secular music. But Bach certainly composed cheerful music as well. He played it at festivals and weddings ... and these occasions were, after all, characterized more by lighthearted, worldly music than the music Bach had written for church services..
