And yes, indeed: You could actually read it. But given how tiny the print is, that certainly wouldn’t be much fun. It’s an excerpt from the biography written by the first significant Bach biographer, Johann Nicolaus Forkel. He received much of his information directly from Bach’s sons themselves. So it’s practically “firsthand.”..
This short biography of Bach was published back then in East Germany, when the East was still the GDR. Various other composers were also honored in this way. That publishing house no longer exists today. It was published in 1983, so these little gems are not yet officially considered antiques, but at over 30 years old, they have certainly been “among us” for quite some time. They were published in Leipzig to mark the celebration of our master’s milestone birthday, as he had composed, performed, and taught music in Leipzig for almost exactly 27 years..
