Bach FAQ 80

Is the "Ursprung" of Johann Sebastian Bach a Family Tree?..

The “Ursprung” (... Origina) is actually the “Ursprung of the Musical Bachish Family”. It is a list of 53 male family members, 41 of whom were musicians. Johann Sebastian compiled it himself in 1735 at the age of 50, by hand. How could it be otherwise?! What we can still read today in the original handwriting, however, is a copy of the original made by Bach’s granddaughter. And there is a second copy..

The “Ursprung” seems to be a family tree ... but it isn’t. At best, it is an extraordinary and irreplaceable resource for genealogists researching the Bach family..

Why isn’t it a family tree? Because it only includes 53 men. Keep in mind, it doesn’t even include all the musicians in the Bach family. And only 42 of them are musicians. Furthermore, all the women are completely missing. Even if they earned money with music. Bach’s second wife in Köthen, for example, earned almost as much as he did. Bach’s children are also largely missing, namely, all the girls. And the easier it would have been for Bach to obtain the birth dates of some of his relatives, the more they are missing from his list. To Bach enthusiasts who don’t practice genealogy, the “Nekrolog” seems to be a family tree. But anyone who enjoys genealogy themselves can easily see why it isn’t one..

That is why the "Ursprung" is unbelievable priceless. However, it's no family tree. Not at all..
