How Many Books Related to the Subject Johann Sebastian Bach Are Existing?..
There is an enormous number of books on the “subject of Johann Sebastian Bach.” They fall into the main categories of “biographies” and “Bach’s musical works.” But there are also plenty of other related topics. These range from travel guides to Bach cities and sites, to children’s books about Bach, and even include fascinating special topics. And there are even novels about the master composer..
To determine the exact number of published books – and, by the way, there are certainly several hundred more unpublished ones – it’s best to consult Professor Yo Tomita’s Bach Bibliography. From the approximately 54,000 publications, you filter out those that are not essays, journal articles, or other types of publications such as doctoral dissertations. Then “the books remain.”..
Over the coming months, I intend to find out from an authoritative source—Professor Tomita has since, in 2012 to be precise, transferred his collection to the Bach Archive Leipzig—how many books are included in this list. Until then, one can only make a rough estimate based on a few representative years. A reasonable estimate would be to assume that about 50 percent of the written works are not actually books—regardless of whether they are paperbacks or hardcovers, small books or thick ones … picture books or highly scholarly works.
