Are There Even Two Seals / Logos / Signs / Monograms of Johann Sebastian Bach? That Is Bach Logo 1 and Bach Logo 2?..
The Bach logo—the Neue Bachgesellschaft (NBG; New Bach Society)) calls it Bach’s symbol. We love the term Bach seal. Some also call it the Bach coat of arms. Or the Bach monogram. There are actually two “authentic” seals of Johann Sebastian Bach. Not just one.
What’s particularly interesting is that on Google U.S. – I do my own googling, too, when I’m writing about a Bach-related topic – the Bach seal / logo with the seven tips actually has a clear lead. Specifically, it appears in the first ten Google results. The first search result also links to the image gallery in my FAQ 93. On Google, seven out of ten Bach seals shown are the one that has been outdated since 2009. Will I be able to change that? In 2012, ten out of ten results actually still displayed exactly the Bach seal or Bach logo that Bach experts have considered the correct one since 1750/1760: namely, the one with the seven tips.
There is no doubt: The Bach Seal with the five prongs is the "official" Bach logo, Bach Coat of Arms, Bach Sign, Bach Monogram ... call it what you like. There is no "officially correct" name..
Today, the “old” Bach coat of arms / Bach logo – which is almost equally prevalent in Germany and dominant in the rest of the world – appears throughout publications and across the internet. Even in Germany, the “old” version will almost certainly never disappear from the world wide web..
For about 260 years, that is from 1750 until almost 2009, it was clear to all Bach fans: seven prongs..
In future publications, careful publicists will likely use only the “new” Bach seal / logo. Moreover, the change and the new insights have now resulted in a distinct history of the Bach seal. After all, the previously “valid” black-and-white coat of arms – as graphically rendered – was changed quite abruptly. The changes to the teeth are quite significant. There are also minor adjustments to the “body,” and now this graphic is the official Bach seal / Bach logo. But … who is qualified to call it the “official emblem”?!..

However, another Bach monogram / Bach logo has now also been officially recognized as a second “valid” Bach seal. A key factor in this was the “discovery” of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Putz Schranck (... that’s right ... in German with “ck” ...) in Meissen Cathedral. It was there that a Bach fan recognized that the motif on the inside of the lid strongly resembled the Bach seal / Bach logo / Bach’s sign. It is, in fact, the Bach seal / Bach logo ... and it has only five points. Or rather, “tips”... since the points aren’t actually round. As mentioned. That can't be right. Is that up there the second “official” Bach seal? Yup, it is. At the very least, it's a graphic interpretation of the Bach seal that is widely regarded today as the most authentic Bach logo. And who says so? Well ... my wife and I do ... and according to Bach scholarship and its research, that's actually correct..
