Bach FAQ 27

How Many of Johann Sebastian Bach's Children Grew Older than 18 Years?..

In the past, it was not uncommon for a family to have twenty children. However, many of them did not live to reach adulthood. And far more children died at birth than do today. It was no different in Johann Sebastian Bach’s family..

From his first marriage to Maria Barbara, three children lived to an advanced age by the standards of the time: Catharina Dorothea, Wilhelm Friedemann, and Carl Philipp Emanuel. Johann Gottfried Bernhard, on the other hand, died at the age of 24, and the twins Johann Christoph and Maria Sophie died at birth. Thus, four children from his first marriage initially survived and reached adulthood..

In his second marriage to Anna Magdalena, five children lived to a relatively long age for that time: Elisabeth Juliana, Johann Christoph Friedrich, Johann August Abraham, Johann Christian, and Johann Carolina. Gottfried Heinrich died at the age of 34. Four children died in infancy, between the ages of one and five. They were Christina Sophia Henrietta, Christian Gottlieb, Regina, and Johanna, as well as Christiana Dorothea. Two of Bach’s children with Anna Magdalena died at birth: Ernestus Andreas and Christina Benedicta Louisa. According to this, six children survived from his second marriage. This means that exactly half of Johann Sebastian Bach’s children reached adulthood..
