Did Bach "Only" Compose or Did He Perform Music, Too?..
All Bach fans, please forgive me for using the word “just.”
Bach was making music long before he began composing it. Bach had already been singing for his father, Johann Ambrosius, who did not take him to events just for fun. Rather, it was so that Johann Sebastian could shine with his singing at weddings, festivals, baptisms, and funerals. In fact, Bach played more music in his lifetime than he composed. After all, every composition had to be revised many times, and to do that, he had to play it over and over again. It wasn’t just art; it was also a “craft.” A composition isn’t some fancy idea that you jot down with a few strokes of the pen … and then it’s done. Music production – and in the volume Bach created it, it was almost “assembly-line work” – also had to be copied. That is, it had to be transcribed for the musicians or singers.
