Bach FAQ 47

Who Are "The Thomaner(s)"?..

Strictly speaking, the Thomaner(s) are the “Thomanerchor” (... the St. Thomas Choir) in Leipzig. The Thomanerchor is one of the most famous boys’ choirs ... and also one of the oldest. After all, the St. Thomas Boys’ Choir has been in existence for more than 800 years. The most famous St. Thomas Cantor – who is always also the director of the St. Thomas Boys’ Choir – was, by far, Johann Sebastian Bach. He held this position for nearly twenty-seven years, until his death in Leipzig in 1750.

In the meantime, following Georg Christoph Biller – the sixteenth Thomas Cantor – Gotthold Schwarz became the seventeenth Thomas Cantor after Johann Sebastian Bach. Today, Andreas Reize leads the Thomanerchor.

The choir was founded around 1212. Many well-known musicians and composers have led the St. Thomas Choir since its founding. Among them was Johann Sebastian Bach’s son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
