Bach FAQ 89
Well, it really depends..
There are four different categories of Bach cities and Bach locations. This is because Johann Sebastian Bach was not the only Bach. There were also his four famous sons. In total, there have been and still are roughly 200 professional and amateur musicians with this name in one family – namely, the “musicali Bachish family”, as Johann Sebastian Bach himself called it..
The first category – for me – includes all the cities and places where Johann Sebastian Bach lived and worked. And not just those where he performed once or twice – or even more often – or inspected an organ. The second category consists of cities and villages that are particularly noteworthy in connection with the Bach family of musicians ... places where one or more Bachs were active for many years, sometimes even for over 200 years without interruption. Finally, the third category consists of towns and places where Johann Sebastian Bach played once or several times, inspected an organ, or visited for other reasons. And the fourth category? These are places that play a role in the early Bach family genealogy. Or a community like Andisleben, which is significant only to a very few members of the Bach family..
Eight Bach cities and places belong to the first category. He certainly lived in Eisenach, but he also performed there with his father. That is why Eisenach definitely belongs in the first category. And Ohrdruf must also be included based on the criteria above. Of course, he lived there with his brother. But he was also already active as a musician, thereby contributing to the family’s financial support ... in addition to the scholarship he had received. Lüneburg is the next Bach city. Johann Sebastian lived there, studied music, among other things, but also earned money to supplement his scholarship. Again through his musical talents: he sang..
Next are the five cities that are undoubtedly among the Bach cities ... three in Thuringia, two further north. First up is A for Arnstadt, then we move to the middle of the alphabet, to M for Mühlhausen, and finally to the end of the alphabet with W for Weimar. The two locations outside Thuringia are Köthen in Saxony-Anhalt and Leipzig in Saxony..
Three special features worth noting: Some biographies and authors ignore Bach's first brief, minor stay in Weimar ... which lasted about six months. We do the same. And Dornheim holds a special place: That's where Bach married his Maria Barbara. However, it's not a “Bach city,” but rather a “Bach village. And Wechmar is a “Bach place. ” Because that's where the story of the entire musical family began. Note: Wechmar and Weimar really do sound similar..
About twenty more cities and towns fall into the third category. Johann Sebastian Bach was active in these places, or they played a significant role in Bach's history. At the top of the list are Erfurt, Weißenfels, and Gotha. A few others – all of which you can find in the chapter Bach Cities and Towns – are listed here as well..
As far as I’m concerned, the fun ends with me at a total of 33 Bach cities and Bach places. That’s because—even in the broadest sense—it doesn’t include places where he simply “just happened to be.” Nor does it include places that, at the time, had fewer than five residents. Nor does it include municipalities that no longer exist today. Nor does it count places he passed through on his “way to the next Bach location.” For example, through the municipality of Lederhose (... Leather Trousers). It actually exists: The thing about the five residents mentioned above was, once again, “typical me.”..
There is a category "D" which actually is a little gift for Kathie, Nancy, Debbie, and Susan, and all of their relatives in the United States of America. I had first created it just for them as this is a convenient way to explore, where their roots in Germany are. And there is Gehren in that category, as it is just a little important, as there were too Bachs living back than, Maria Barbara Bach and her father, the organist there. And Gehren does not fit into the categories "A" or "B" or "C". Plus, meanwhile, there are four more locations, which I found with my Bach genealogy research. These four are Gräfenroda, Janegg, Hanfthal, and Ungern. And they're only interesting to Bach fans who are interested in the genealogy prior to Veit Bach: maybe 20 people on the planet?..
