Bach FAQ 29
PDQ Bach – or P.D.Q. Bach (…with dots) – is an imaginary 21st child of Johann Sebastian Bach, created as a story and a joke. I’ve done a bit of research—albeit rather superficially—into the story of PDQ (… P.D.Q.) and everything surrounding it, and I find the whole thing so ridiculous that I wouldn’t even want to use it as a joke. Although … you know that by now … otherwise I’d stop at almost nothing..
PDQ ... or P.D.Q., with the dots... that’s (... to me) just too silly! But wait: It wasn’t until we were at Wartburg Castle near Eisenach, the Bach city, showing Dwight Back, a cousin of JSB’s and mine from Texas, USA, a bit of the “Land of the Bache,” that I heard a completely different opinion for the first time. Namely, from other tourists from America with whom we were chatting about Bach. And in the course of that, we “ended up” talking about P.D.Q. Then, in May 2017, I was presented – this time by an expert – with a completely opposite point of view..
Let’s just agree on this: PDQ Bach = P.D.Q. Bach is a very confusing and potentially serious pitfall for those new to Bach. For Bach fans, however – for true Bach enthusiasts and anyone with a special interest – P.D.Q. might just be a quite original, lovable 21st Bach child after all. So ... with great pleasure, a smile, and heartfelt thanks for the suggestion ... here is a little detour to Wikipedia about P.D.Q. and then, of course, to the creator of this Bach son, Professor Peter Schickele: your reading on Pretty Damned Quick Bach, as PDQ is known by his full name..
