Bach FAQ 81
No, the Bachs did not come from Preßburg. Veit Bach did not come from Preßburg. Why is that? Because enough qualified people searched for evidence to support this theory ... and no one found any. Are they from Hungary (... Ungarn)? Isn’t that what it says in Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Ursprung”? And wasn’t that based on the story passed down by his great-great-grandfather? Another argument against this is that Johann Sebastian Bach also stated that the Bachs, listed under number 1 in the famous “Ursprung,” actually came from “Ungern.” He specifically did not say Hungary (... Ungarn)..
Do they come from Ungarn (... Hungary) or from Ungern? Anyone interested can meanwhile read about it “to your heart’s content” on this website. Because that was the most fascinating chapter for me within my entire Bach project. Anyone interested is sure to find here the most authoritative summary ever of all publications on Veit’s origins. It also includes research findings that were previously unknown. Get there here..
And from Preßburg? There was a certain Mr. Korabinsky who compiled a sort of municipal register for the city of Preßburg. Other than that, he wrote only two other insignificant books. He noted that there were several people in Preßburg with the last name Pach. Though they had different first names. And one or two were even bakers. Bach did mention in his list, the “Ursprung,” that Veit had been a baker. This led Korabinsky to the completely wrong conclusion that he had found Veit’s origins. Because there had been an Urban Pach. Yes, Urban Pach … and Veit Bach … that does sound very similar. LOL..
No one, not a single biographer, whether well-known or unknown, has been able to substantiate this thesis so far. No document has been found to date—not a single one—that supports this claim, for it is not a theory. The theories that assert the opposite—namely, that Preßburg plays no role whatsoever—are, however, entirely plausible. Explaining this in more detail in this FAQ section, however, would not go too far, but rather far too far. Just click here..
