Bach FAQ 164

The Bach Monument: Which Is the Oldest, Youngest, Coolest, Biggest and Most Hidden Bach Monument?..

The Bach monument: Ever since composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy put his heart and soul into raising money for the first Bach monument on earth with music performing music many, many decades ago, similar tributes have been added here and there..

But what do I, the author of this, my website, understand by a Bach monument? For me, a Bach monument is an explicit tribute to this greatest musician of all time. So a simple reminder of the master “nailed” to a church wall is not enough to join my “collection”. Because then I could screw something similar onto our house myself ... and then list it here. So ... have fun discovering these worldwide tributes to Bach. However, there are almost only pictures here. You can read more by clicking here..

The most recent Bach monument I ( ! ) discovered in Berlin, in the Treptow-Köpenick district. However, it was not located where I expected it to be according to Google. And no, it is not the swirl in the foreground..

It is a Bach monument that has “moved”. In the previous picture, it can be seen very small in the background. It is not the only monument that “did” something like this..

The Bach monument, which refused to be photographed voluntarily: Two couples who are friends, while traveling independently, stood in front of it in the very narrow street. And the weather was bad. Both times. So there was no chance of taking a great picture. A third friend, who kindly allowed us to publish these photos, is the author of the Orgelseite.de (... The Pipe Organ Page). He “got lucky” with good weather. Take a look there: It's definitely worth it. © Martin Doering..

That's right, in the picture “one above”, it's the second master from the left. Here, very close, above, it's the bust to the left of Mr. van Beethoven. © Martin Doering..

Photographed many years ago, this Bach monument only found its way onto this website ten years later..

It is located in the Protestant Church of St. Jacobi in Berlin-Pankow. And today, I no longer remember how I once found this latecomer”..

Finally, a very famous Bach monument? That's right: It's the New Bach Monument in Leipzig. It's definitely the largest one, too. And it's only about a 20-second walk from the oldest Bach monument..

He is truly impressive: Herr Bach in Leipzig..

The Most Modern Bach Monument..

It's hard to spot from here. It was also virtually impossible to find on the internet: the Bach monument in Ansbach, in northern Bavaria..

It is undoubtedly the most modern Bach monument..

This Johann Sebastian Bach monument was also difficult to find on the internet, that is, via Google. There was only one tiny photo on the fifth or sixth page. And it looked like an outdoor shot. Because the sun was shining on Bach. But that only happens for a few hours a year, when the sun shines through the right window at the right time of year and on the right day..

Now you can see it: Yup, it really is Bach..

Back then, Berliners called the Siegesallee ”Puppenallee” (... Doll Alley). There were once 32 groups of three figures each. A few were “stolen” after the war. Bach was one of them..

Bingo, it's the most vanished Bach monument in the history of all Bach monuments. In the turmoil of war around 1945, it suddenly disappeared. Can you spot King Frederick, “Old Fritz”, on the left? Of course you can. And Bach is either the smaller bust on the left. Or Bach's bust is behind the giant monument of the king..

One More "Relocated" Bach Monument..

This Bach monument once stood in front of St. George's Church, right in the center of Eisenach. Now it stands on Frauenplan square. In the background, you can see five percent of the historic Bach House and much more of the ultra-modern Bach Museum..

Another of the oldest Bach monuments: the one in Eisenach, Thuringia..

The Bach Monument in a Completely Different Musical Hemisphere: Specifically, in China..

That's right, Johann Sebastian Bach is also adored in Shanghai. He stands very close to the large central station: huge and “labeled” in Chinese and German. © Reinhard and Christiane Casper..

Almost on “the other side of the world”: JSB. © Reinhard and Christiane Casper..

The “Coolest” Bach Monument..

A visit to Madame Tussauds Museum in Berlin is particularly worthwhile if you are a Bach fan. But even if you're not! However, is that really a Bach monument up there? Well ... considering that only the most famous people are modeled and displayed at Madame Tussauds, it's quite an honor. Nowhere else is it so much fun to have a photo taken with the master, by the way..

Bach in Bavaria's “Hall of Fame”..

Here, too, you will find a Bach monument that I discovered very late: That is the bust of Johann Sebastian Bach in the collection of 130 personalities from German History. It is located in the Walhalla near Donaustauf, close to Regensburg in Bavaria..

One of the approximately 130 busts is that of “our master.” You can explore it in more detail here..

The Bach Monument in the Smallest Bach Village of All: Namely in Dornheim Near Arnstadt..

During normal daytime hours, anyone can enter the churchyard and admire the Bach monument. However, the wedding church can only be accessed by prior arrangement by telephone a few days in advance..

Johann Sebastian Bach married his wife Maria Barbara Bach in Dornheim..

The Oldest Bach Monument..

We not only owe Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy this first Bach monument, but also the entire Bach Renaissance. Where it is located: read about it below the following photo..

Only for Bach fans: No, it is not located in a park near Dittrichring, but right next to the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, about a 20-second walk away from the New Bach Monument. Which is the same thing, but less confusing for visitors to Leipzig and admirers of Bach..

The “least Bach for time and money.” Can you spot the tiny Bach monument between the two trees? I was able to easily remove all the cobwebs before taking my photos..

At least you can photograph Bach in such a way that the monument looks impressive..

It was practically impossible to find on the internet or on Google: an entire ensemble of Bach church windows in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, behind the Altar of the Blood in St. Jacob's Church. © Info..

I asked myself: How do you actually know that the organist in the middle is Bach? Only then did I discover the many windows around him. LOL..

It required a good friend from the US and my description of our Bach Project to help me locate this gem in Prague, Czechia. Can you see Bach? © Pixabay..

Yes ... the Bach monument at the National Theater. Next time I'll show up with a fire department turntable ladder. Of course ... not really. Thank you, Joan..

The “Gloomiest” Bach Monument..

© Renate Bach..

The black monument is already “unpleasant and cold.” And then Bach’s very grim expression adds to that. © Renate Bach..

The Monument in Arnstadt, Bach's First “Real Place of Work”..

There he is hanging around: Johann Sebastian Bach in Arnstadt. At that time, he still had “nonsense in his head”..

Simply taking a super-long vacation, having a woman perform in church, drawing his epee against his choir students ... that was the master at this stage of his life, alongside his developing genius..

A beautiful spot in Köthen: the Bach Square in the city's Baroque Quarter. On the left in the background is Bach's second home in Köthen. The first no longer exists. And, of course, this one was only built where the Bachs once lived in Köthen..

He would have loved to stay in Köthen for the rest of his life. Then disaster struck the Bach family..

Honor to Whom Honor Is Due..

Right next to the altar: Johann Sebastian Bach's third resting place in Leipzig. The first time, he was simply hastily buried. The second time, the citizens of Leipzig honored him. The third resting place is finally fitting for such an extraordinary personality..

That's right, I actually bought most of the bouquets above myself. A good photographer doesn't travel 870 kilometers there and back and doesn't get permission to take photos behind the barrier rope. And then photographs wilted flowers on the grave of the greatest musician of all time, of all places..
