Bach FAQ 163

Bach Memorials in Berlin ... Was or Is There One Bach Monument? Or Were or Are There Two, Three, or Four Monuments?..

Hurrah, it's the FAQ with the most complicated question. Why? Because it can't be titled “Is there a Bach monument in Berlin?” nor “Are there four Bach monuments in Berlin?” And why not?..

Because the first Bach monument I found in Berlin no longer exists. For me, since World War II and for more than five years after I began my hunt for a collection of all Bach monuments worldwide, none could be found in Berlin..

Because I couldn't find any photos of Bach monuments on Google in the “Image section” in Berlin at all, I discovered the missing Bach monument unusually late: long after the page “All Bach Monuments on Earth” had been created..

And I didn't actually find this Bach monument either. Only in photos. Until 1945, the monument stood on the Siegesallee in Berlin. At the time, this boulevard was also popularly known as “Puppen-Allee” (... Doll Alley). More on that below, because after the Battle for Berlin and in the turmoil shortly before the end of World War II, this very tribute to Bach disappeared. But I finally “rediscovered” it ... with the right keywords. Not in real life, of course, but “only” in pictures..

Berlin, Siegesallee ... without the Bach bust. The image above gives an impression of what the entire “Puppen-Allee” (... Doll Alley) in Berlin looked like at that time..

Above, you can see Bach to the left of  “Old Fritz”. On the right, there is at least still a picture of this Bach monument..

My wife and I can't remember how we found this Bach memorial in the Hoffnungskirche” in Berlin-Pankow. I took photos there and then failed to include them on my website for a whole nine years..

The Church of Hope in Pankow. We would have even found pictures at Martin Doering's website. But at the time, we didn't think to search through thousands of his fascinating organ pictures for this purpose..

One of the “Very Latest” Finds: Another Cool Bach Monument in Berlin-Adlershof..

Once again, it was pure coincidence while researching completely different “objects of desire”. Using an unusual combination of keywords and clicking on the image option led me to an unusual result. There was only one single image of another Johann Sebastian Bach monument. As has often been the case. According to the relevant page, it should be located at Hans-Schmidt-Straße 6–8. And what did I find there? Nothing. The music school was still there, but not the Bach monument..

I remembered that while googling, I had also discovered this Bach monument a second time. Two times, in fact. And it stood on a completely different pedestal. I thought it was a duplicate, a work of art that stood here and there, too. I didn't pay any attention to it. Only the street name “Mörikestraße” stuck in my mind. With a fair amount of disappointment, I decided to simply type “Mörikestraße” into my navigation system when I wanted to photograph this work on a Saturday. I hoped that there was only one Mörikestraße in Berlin. And indeed, it was 11 minutes away by car, and I hoped for luck. In fact, Mörikestraße is extremely short, and as I drove slowly past, I noticed a green area behind (... or in front of) an imposing church. And there it was. A small monument. I parked and, to my delight, it was there. With this other pedestal and, unfortunately, in extreme backlight. But I was overjoyed and was able to take photos in perfect weather..

It's barely visible. In the right quarter of the picture: the Bach monument in the Treptow district..

This Bach monument has moved in Berlin: First it stood in front of a music school, and then it stood in front of another music school. No wonder I was confused by what I found on the web..

Photographed from the front, and then also from below upwards ... it would have been 100 percent backlit..

And here you go: photographed from the other side..

And Also in Berlin: Johann Sebastian Bach's Monument “you Can Touch”..

I remember finding the following Bach monument once before: That was about twelve years ago, when the Bach on Bach project was supposed to turn into something completely different. But ... sometimes you forget good ideas. Well ... in the meantime, the Bach monument came back to mind and found its place elsewhere in my project. By the way: Of course, Madame Tussaud's isn't thrilled when you touch Bach. But having your picture taken with him, or taking a selfie... that's okay..

It is definitely worth a visit, even if you are not interested in Johann Sebastian Bach. This link will take you once again to the webiste of the famous wax museum. What an honor: Johann Sebastian Bach at Madame Tussauds Berlin..
