Bach Cities and Bach Places: Janegg Close to Duchcov, Bohemia, Czech Republic..

1  Why Is Janegg One of the Bach Places?..

Janegg is located near Duchcoc. And Duchcov is located in Bohemia. In what is now the Czech Republic. Bohemia borders directly on Bavaria in the east and Thuringia in the northeast..

Janegg near Duchcov is definitely not a “Johann Sebastian Bach city”. Not because the population is only 350 souls: Janegg is therefore not a city. But ... Janegg is also not a “Johann Sebastian Bach village” either. Johann Sebastian Bach was never in this community, nor did he know of its existence. For a long time, nobody knew that this location was a real Bach place. An important Bach place in the early Bach genealogy..

It was “discovered” ... that Janegg is a Bach village ... only around the year 1950. A small group of Bach researchers discovered that the first Bach, who still plays a role in this family today, emigrated to Bohemia together with his friend Abendroth. We can still read today that Hans Veit Bach's uncle and his father asked for a blessing from the priest of Gräfenroda in the local St. Laurentius Church. Hans Veit was the son of Hans Bach, who is now associated with the date 1504. A document known among Bach fans as the “Kirchenbuße” (... Church Penance) mentions this exact date. However, the two documented key dates are not necessarily connected ... but they are very likely: 1504 and Hans Bach. Whether Hans Bach was born in 1504 or whether Hans Bach moved to Gräfenroda in 1504 remains a mystery. We only know that this Hans existed. And that the church penance speaks of a “world-famous musical family”. This church penance dates back to before Johann Sebastian Bach wrote down his Origin of the Musical Bachish Family in 1735..

Hans Veit Bach and his friend Abendroth left Thuringia, or more precisely Gräfenroda in Thuringia, and moved first to Moldau in what is now Czechia, just ten minutes away from the current German-Czech border in the Ore Mountains. Ten minutes by car. It is important to note that Moldau, just across the current border, has nothing to do with the river Moldau or the modern-day state of Moldova..

From Moldau, a truly tiny village right on today's border in the Ore Mountains, both of them – or perhaps just Hans Veit – continued their journey southward. To the vicinity of Duchcov. Duchcov is the nearest larger community south of Moldau. Veit Bach was born in Janegg, a suburb of Duchcov. The development of the rest of the Bach family, who had emigrated earlier, is not taken into account here. That is a job for my wife Renate. She will include it in her Johann Sebastian Bach genealogy between 2025 and 2030, as soon as she has the time to do so alongside her job. As the author of this website, I am concerned exclusively with the “leanest” lineage of the family before Johann Sebastian Bach: I am only interested in the father of the father of the father. And so I arrive at Hans Bach in Gräfenroda. Then it's back “forward in time”. It is also worth noting that at this early stage, the Bachs were not yet a family of musicians. It was only later, much later than 1504, namely around 100 years after the first known emigration, that the family became a family of musicians with the son of Veit Bach the Elder, namely Veit Bach the Younger in Wechmar. 4  Information About the Bach Place of Janegg..

Jeníkov u Duchcova. This is the name of the village in Czech. It lies on the upper edge of the Bohemian Basin. Janegg is a community of 900 souls right next to the town of Dux. Incidentally, these are the names in German. Six kilometers to the east is Teplice, German Teplitz..

Duchcov is somewhat larger, Teplice even larger than Janegg. And what does that mean? Duchcov is home to 8,700 people, Teplice to 51,000, making all three locations easy to find on Google Maps. Apart from the Church of St. Peter and Paul, there is understandably not much to explore. But that's also “not a big deal”. That's why there are also some pictures of the immediate neighborhood in the video. Incidentally, the Bach family had to walk 17 kilometers from Moldova (... Moldau / Moldavia). It took them four hours on foot, whereas today it takes thirty minutes by car. With an e-bike it takes around 50 minutes. It is a 45-minute walk from Janegg to Duchcov, but only five minutes by car..
