Bach FAQ 157
What am I allowed to do, and what am I not allowed to do? And what are you allowed to do, and what are you not allowed to do? More on that after the introduction. The following use of music is intended: At the beginning of the lesson, you connect your mini speaker to your laptop. Alternatively, you can connect it to your tablet or smartphone. Then you open your playlist on YouTube and start your collection. But there is a problem: the ads before the songs. But ... there are other options! Almost at the end of this page..
I myself have produced 33 musical pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach. Based on his original sheet music. I myself am not affiliated with GEMA. And Bach has been dead for more than 270 years. In order to be allowed to publish his work, he would only need to have been dead for 70 years. So 270 years is “more than enough.” I can and am allowed to play music that is no longer subject to copyright protection. For example, works by Beethoven, Mozart, and Handel. However, I am not allowed to use music composed, arranged, or performed by Amy Winehouse, for example. This is because she was a member of GEMA (... the English equivalent). And she died only recently. And what does that mean in practice? It means that I am not allowed to collect practically any Classical Works performed by musicians who are still alive or have not been dead for 70+ years. And then pass them on to you. Except if a child performs them, a music teacher or a musician who is not a member of GEMA..
What are you allowed to do? Under an agreement with GEMA Germany (... see section 5 ff.; § 46 UrhG), you are allowed to use music subject to GEMA fees in class. It is very probable, that the same rule is valid in your country ... please check that. This applies to all artists across the board. However, you are only allowed to use it for this purpose. Not for a party, not for another event, not for the kids later, not to pass on to colleagues. In short: You are really not allowed to do anything with it except use it in your ( ! ) lessons. One exception: You can, of course, save the playlist for your kids for next year. And for the year after that. And for the year after that. Finally: I am not allowed to give legal advice, and this section was therefore not legal advice or legal information. But with my link, you can get your own picture in just five minutes..

In that case, please be sure to read the information in document 14 of the Teaching Material Classical Music. This is particularly important if you have concerns about sharing data with Google. Or if you want to work with your children in much less time than it takes to create a playlist..

7. Your Playlist ... There are Several Options..
First, let me remind you that you only have to go through the “hassle” and effort of creating or having a playlist created once for the coming years (... but to do this, you must maintain an active YouTube subscription – via YouTube – and also pay for it). Measured against this, it's not really much effort. The best way to do this is to use my Classical Top 100 and select your favorite pieces with the green square at the beginning of the line. To use a free playlist via YouTube, you will have to mute the occasional commercials that YouTube plays before the pieces – unfortunately, these are unpredictable and unreliable. One of your students can also take on the role of DJ, so to speak, compiling the pieces you have defined and playing them in class..
In addition to YouTube, you can also compile your playlist via Amazon Prime (... we don't get any commission there), Spotify, or other streaming services. If you already use one of these services, this would of course be “free of charge.” You could also consider asking a student whose parents already subscribe to one of these services to compile the works of your choice. In addition, you could consider whether a subscription would also allow you to use other services, as we do in Germany: for example, the elimination of most shipping costs for Amazon orders. If you take out a subscription solely for the purpose of enriching your Teaching Material Cassical Music, you should also bear in mind that you will have to pay the monthly fees next year and the year after that as well ... or your playlist – or playlists – will be lost forever. The Option 8 offers an alternative..
8. Purchase Your Project Music as You Used to Buy 45s (... in the Past, These Were Records with Two Songs Each)..
Of course, that works too. And for teachers who are familiar with the internet, this tip is really unnecessary: First, decide which 20 to 30 Classical Hits you love. And which ones you think are suitable for use. Then go to Amazon Music Downloads and purchase your works as MP3 downloads. However, you should listen to the samples critically beforehand, as there are of course dozens of differences in interpretation and quality. The advantage is that you download the piece “forever,” meaning you “own” it. This makes a lot of sense if you really like our Teaching Material Classical Music and want to use it with a new class every year..
Composers Calendars, Bach Calendars, Pipe Organ Calendars, Music Calendars..
