Bach FAQ 143

Johann Sebastian Bach ... My Pictures and Photos ... for Example, of Bach Locations, Bach Monuments, and Bach “Treasures”..

This is what makes photography fun for me: the Bach sign in the foreground on the left, the Bach monument in the center of the photo, and behind it the Bach family home in Köthen..

This is how I take pictures like this: I even lie on my back sometimes. For this photo, however, even my head touched the pavement. True, I could have learned something else. And chosen a different hobby..

Bach Images And Bach Illustrations: That Is What You Are Allowed to Do with My Pics..

I have posted hundreds of pictures and illustrations on this portal of mine. And once it is completely finished, there will probably be thousands of photos..

What are you allowed to do with them? You are allowed to download them. And not only that, you are allowed to do whatever you like with them. You can embed these photos in your website, Bach enthusiasts can use them for advertising purposes. Cultural institutions can use all images and photos for their public relations work. You can use the photos and illustrations in books. And publish them in a newspaper. There are only three small conditions. Please read the next section before using them..

One of the Bach images, or Bach photos, that you can download without hesitation. And what's more: Use it to design your own Bach website. Illustrate the cover of your Bach book. Or use it in your newspaper. A “ © ”placed directly next to the image, www.BachOnBach.com, makes all this possible free of charge ... and I would appreciate a brief notification. It goes without saying that the notice should be in the same font size as the words in the caption or the body text. And I would like this copyright notice to be in horizontal font and outside the motif..

Bach Photos and Bach Illustrations: That Is What You Are Supposed Not to Do..

What you are not allowed to do: You may not use any photos or illustrations without informing me. You may not publish the copyright notice exclusively in a summary elsewhere in your use. In the case of electronic publication, a link must be placed next to the copyright notice. You may also not pass on the motifs. Above all, you may not use the illustrations to sell them or to personalize neutral products. Not even in a modified version..

I can only provide you with my work free of charge: all my pictures and illustrations on the subject of Bach. However, in order to publish photos and images, you must observe other rights besides those of the photographer. For example, there are photos of churches, or more precisely, the interior of churches: Here you must ask for permission if you want to publish such photos. My permission is not enough for you to be allowed to reproduce them. This is the case, for example, with the photos in the Bach House in Eisenach: If you want to publish such photos, you also need permission from there. Or the photos of Johann Sebastian Bach's grave in St. Thomas Church. The same applies to the photos I was allowed to take in Ulm Minster, Ulm, Germany: In all these cases, you must make your own additional inquiries..

Then personal rights apply. Photos of people depicted. An example: my wife, our friends from the USA, and I in front of the Bach Ancestral Home. If you want to publish these photos, you must ask me first ... but why would you want to?..

Images and illustrations that have a note above the image or at the end of the caption (... the copyright notices after the “ © ”) indicate that I am not the author of these works. You may not copy and use these illustrations from this, my website. Please read the license terms if you want to use an image from Wikipedia for your non-commercial website. Alternatively, you can also purchase images from Fotolia.com..

Are you allowed to download this dreamlike “picture of all Bach pictures” and then use it? No, not “just like that.” You are allowed to download it. But then please pick up the phone: Call the office in Ulm. Ask them ... and if your publication is attractive and you make a small donation, they will probably say yes. “Just do it”? Please don’t..

My Bach Images in Your Book, My Bach Illustrations on Your Bach Website..

This is also important for my photos of books on the subject of Bach. But why wouldn't I be allowed to publish photos of Bach books on my own website? The publisher and author of each book are happy about it. But if you download one of the photos of the books, write about it, and perhaps even comment negatively... then you will get into trouble... and rightly so. As a general rule, especially if you want to publish pictures that I have taken, or even photos in such books: You can only obtain this creative work from me free of charge. In this case, you must also ask the publisher for permission..

Another example: Surely one of the images, for example a steel engraving, an etching, a wood engraving, or a painting, may not yet be 70 years old. Or: The painter who created it has not been dead for 70 years. If such an image is on my website, then that would be borderline. But if you download it and reproduce it, then you need a good dose of luck, because that is not legal. Of course, it is also not very imaginative to pass off images or illustrations as your own ... but who would do such a thing? If they can get them "for free"?!..

My photos of Bach books: Using images like the one above is very borderline. Strictly speaking, you need permission from the publisher. However, if you are helping with sales, why should there be any objection to your use of it? You are also allowed to use this photo among all the book images. This is because it is really old enough and therefore in the public domain..

Taking Nice Photos Is My Profession..

Photos... I've been taking them for as long as I can remember. I took my first pictures with an SLR camera on a strap around my neck. At a time I can hardly remember. However, I didn't take those pictures myself, of course. It was my father. That's as far back as my memory goes. I was just “there.” In South Tyrol, Italy. At a time when Germans weren't yet “travel champions.” When South Tyrol was just emerging from being an insider tip to an exciting destination, and when my daddy was quite happy to wait three hours for the perfect sunset behind a mountain range..

That was when it began, my love of beautiful images. The joy of taking perfect photos. I learned how to photograph professionally later on. And how to do it “properly.” At a photography academy in Stuttgart, Germany. With Lazi, a nature photographer of rank and renown. He is still well known among connoisseurs today. The next photos were taken in the German Armed Forces. How do you take “beautiful” photos, attractive pictures, of tanks and soldiers, generals and helicopters? The fact is: It can be done. And as the “man from the press,” the ordinary private first class really enjoys doing it..

I certainly wasn't taking photos yet at that age. But what my dad was doing: I wanted to do that too, even back then..

That's when I started taking my first photos. I know this from stories passed down. However, that's an ice cream, not a camera ... but you would have recognized that even without the caption..

Not all photos on this website are from my camera. Of course, you can also find many when researching your own ancestry. Some photos feature relatives, while others do not. On this website, my website..

A crown jewel in my collection of ancient photos from the history of Johann Sebastian Bach's family. This one fascinated me when I saw it for the very first time. And back then, I never would have thought that one day I would get a real original. I received it. “Forever.” From my cousin Cathy Myers in Minnesota, USA. The photo shows the Bach Band: Reinhold Bach and his seven sons. It was taken in Marion Township near Rochester, Minnesota, USA. Thank you, Cathy, it means a lot to me..

A photo of an age-old edition of the “Poughkeepsie Daily Eagle”, an American daily newspaper. It reports on the sinking of the “Empress of Ireland”, the ship that Reinhold Bach took to Germany. He drowned, but his daughter survived. It is photos and documents like these that make genealogy so exciting, beyond simply collecting data..

Taking Beautiful Pictures for a Lifetime: My Profession and My Calling..

And so you spend your life taking beautiful pictures. Of course, when it's a profession and a means of earning a living, “taking beautiful pictures” isn't always the priority. But presenting great pictures has always been an essential aspect of getting the next job after the last one. So, in the course of your professional life, you take photo after photo. The ones you “have to” take ... and the ones you simply enjoy taking..

A picture like those taken in the first half of the last century. It was a time when people began to look friendly in “official” pictures. Not always deadly serious. When you went to a professional photographer. The young gentleman on the right, wearing the sailor shirt, is my grandfather, by the way. Just so you know..

Photos, Photos, Photos: Of All 33 Bach Locations..

That was the goal: to take pictures of all the Bach cities and Bach locations. Actually, pictures and photos of all the Bach monuments, too ... although one of them is in Pittsburgh. USA. And another one even further away: in Shanghai, China. I was most interested in pictures of these two works of art. But ... the photos on my website have to be great, not just “documentary pictures.” I don't use photos that are blurry, or pictures with random backgrounds.

“He should take the photos himself...” you might be thinking right now. That's my plan: I want my website to become well known, very well known. In many, many years' time. And then maybe a Chinese person who admires Bach and lives in Shanghai will read these lines. On the English page, of course. And maybe, just maybe, this Chinese person likes to take pictures. And adopts this philosophy for his pictures for me. Then he might send me some photos. Of this monument. Completely free of charge. That would make me happy. Now you're thinking, “Why free of charge?” Well, because hiring a photographer for a few pictures and photos ... I could probably do that myself. But the budget for my project doesn't allow for that. And the same applies to pictures from Pittsburgh in the USA. Long after these lines were written, I actually received permission to publish some fantastic photos of the monument in Shanghai..

33 Bach cities and Bach places, for instance Eisenach, Thuringia ..

... there are three cities, in which Bach spent his youth, for instance Lübeck, Lower Saxony..

Three photos are shown here as examples. Is the place in picture number 3 also significant in the life of Johann Sebastian Bach? Actually, not at all. But I'm a mischievous person, I like the number “3.” Incidentally, the place above is called Störmthal, Saxony..

Images and More Images: From Engravings, from Paintings and from Etchings..

It's wonderful to hold such originals, that is, pictures or engravings that are 120 years old or more, in your hands. Below is one such motif. To be thrilled by the sharpness and quality: That is a “tingling sensation” that I cannot convey to you here. When you have once again been able to “get your hands on” one of these treasures – as we call such motifs – found it, and then also bought it. Such pictures have mildew stains. The edges of such pictures are damaged. And at first, you don't like that at all. But then, as you immerse yourself more and more in this world of “little antiques” surrounding Bach, you begin to love them ... these little stains and also the damage. On the treasures..

This is not just “one picture among many.” It is an old, or rather age-old, antique wood engraving. First we had to find it, then buy it. Finally, we scanned it at the highest resolution, added a “mirror” at the bottom ... and now you can enjoy it. That’s what I mean: taking pleasure in beautiful pictures..

Images, Images, and More Images: Well Scanned Is "Half the Battle"..

In fact, some images are better scanned, while others produce better results when photographed. You can't know beforehand, but you can tell afterwards. So we always photograph them. And we also scan them: all images, meaning all etchings, steel and wood engravings, paintings, but also advertising stamps, for example, a curious relic from the last and, in some cases, the second-last century..

An advertising badge ... It was included in the package when you bought one or another item. That was a long, long time ago..

Another one of those ancient pictures. You know how it goes: first find it, then buy it, then scan it. Finally, choose a frame and fit Bach into it. And once again we have a “picture of pictures”: Hans, a minstrel in a golden frame. By the way, he was not a member of the Bach family of musicians. It is Hans Bach from Nürtingen, Germany..

Images and Photos Become Illustrations..

Of course, we also use images and photos to create beautiful collages that illustrate the topics. And by the way, with reference to the first sections: You are also welcome to use these images and photos. Go ahead, we look forward to hearing your thoughts on Bach on Bach. And those of you who are still bravely reading this can rejoice. I "have ready". Enjoy the hundreds of photos spread over more than 700 pages of this web project on Johann Sebastian Bach..

That's exactly what we mean: Many pictures become one, a collage. Add a mirror ... and you're done! Here in the picture are Johann Sebastian Bach's “fellow artists”. Only one of them was the same age as Bach, namely Mr. Handel..
