The Little Bach Book ... what a wonderful, easy and entertaining read. Be sure to read more on this page..
The Little Bach Book. This book is something very special. And it takes a little help to really discover it. The American author David Gordon wrote to me – after discovering “Bach on Bach” – and brought this cute, little, special work to my attention. He asked me to help him present his treasure. Of course, I thought at first, I wanted to do him this favor, among Bach lovers, so to speak. But shortly after agreeing, I had reservations about doing so. And this was for a very trivial reason: I assumed that "The Little Bach Book" was a Bach biography. And since I had written a Bach biography myself and my wife offers several Bach biographies through her Publishing House, it would have been “competition,” so to speak. So I contacted David Gordon and explained my concerns to him. Due to time constraints, I probably wouldn't have read this cute little work myself for several years ... because, yes, the Johann Sebastian Bach Project still takes up all my free time..
David Gordon: Well-known daily newspapers are thrilled. And I am too, after reading his "Little Bach Book". © David Gordon..
How good it was that I contacted David Gordon! He explained to me precisely why the “Little Bach Book” is not a biography. And I can now confirm that. Because after hearing his description, I was so interested that I ended up reading the entire book in my spare time. And what can I say?! It's an endlessly fascinating read..
One of many, many fascinating illustrations. Only a few of them are already familiar to Bach fans. Many –because they describe the time when Johann Sebastian Bach lived – are certainly new to you. Take a look at a second illustration on one of the book's pages below..
The Little Bach Book is about everything that was part of everyday life in Bach's time. How did Johann Sebastian Bach and his family live – first with his siblings and parents, then later with his own children, initially with Maria Barbara and later with Anna Magdalena? What did people eat in those days? How did they spend their evenings without electric light and with extremely expensive candles? How advanced was medicine at that time? All exciting, interesting “unimportant” details from the time when Johann Sebastian and his family lived. And all meticulously and scientifically researched. By an American in historical German literature! Hats off! This enjoyable read is particularly suitable as a supplement to a Bach biography. Or if you have already read a biography about the super composer. Or even if you would like to buy a biography about the musician from Thuringia in the near future..
As a very creative person and Bach fan, I have a very special suggestion for you. Why not enjoy “Bach as comprehensive fun”? Two publications go together really well, which is why David Gordon is given so much space on this website..
Peter Bach, Jr.'s Bach Biography for Children (... and for Adults) presents Johann Sebastian Bach in an easy-going manner. It has what it takes to make Bach really entertaining. This biography is certainly the “easiest to digest” Bach biography on the book market ... among 700 Bach biographies. It is a real biography. And perhaps the most entertaining one. You can actually enjoy it alongside David Gordon's “Little Bach Book.”..
Another suggestion: Order the download “The 33 most popular Bach works” from Renate Bach's shop, “Bach 4 You,” for a few Euros, either as a combination or for each book individually. Play it quietly while you read. Very quietly. Then this trilogy will be a unique, “well-rounded” Bach experience. This is especially true for German Bach fans. For them, the embedded German words for the English themes that David Gordon has “added” provide many, many heartwarming moments that will make them smile. I highly recommend this book..
That's what The Little Bach Book is about: What was it like back then ... how did people travel? What did they do in the evenings? How long did they work? What happened if a family member fell ill?..
The Washington Post describes tenor David Gordon as a model of charm and style. And as an outstanding performer who has enjoyed an international career as a singer, author, educator, and speaker. He has performed hundreds of concerts throughout North America, Europe, and even Japan. The Chicago Tribune even describes him as “one of the best Bach tenors.” A St. Louis newspaper named him one of the greatest “interpreters of the gospel of our time” in 2016. For three decades, Gordon has been one of the organizers of the famous Carmel Bach Festival. He can be heard on 15 CDs, which he has recorded with Decca, London, RCA, Telarc, and other major labels..
